Smart Glow smarter for Galaxy S8?

A couple of weeks ago a new Samsung feature dubbed Smart Glow was unearthed. It took the form of a ring of LEDs around the rear camera lens and promised to smarten up your notification lights and your selfies on future Samsung phones, but it seems there could be a lot more to it than was initially revealed.

According to SamMobile, Smart Glow will get smarter over time. The feature will apparently first launch on the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2016) with three functions, namely 'Priority alerts', 'Selfie assist' and 'Usage alerts'.

Priority alerts would allow users to assign colors to specific contacts, so you can see who's calling or messaging you without looking at the screen. Selfie assist would cause the LEDs to light up when a face is detected, and then automatically take a picture a couple of seconds later, making it easier to use the rear camera for selfies.

Finally, Usage alerts would light up in specific colors to show the battery or charging status of the phone.

New images of iPhone EarPods with Lightning cable

Another set of images has surfaced on Chinese social networking site Weibo that appears to show off the standard set of iPhone EarPods, but with a Lightning cable in place of the 3.5mm plug.

This isn't our first exposure to these purported, refreshed buds. A similar looking set surfaced in March of this year, but they look ever so slightly different.

Another report seems to indicate that these headphones, if real, would be optional and the 3.5mm jack will see another day in the next iPhone. As you can see, these rumors really are all over the place.

T-mobile finally gets Marshmallow for Galaxy Note 4

T-Mobile is now updating the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, a phone that many refer to as the best phablet of 2014, to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Once you've installed the update on your phablet, the Note 4 will be running software version N910TUVU2EPE3. Note that the update measures 1.5GB in size, and you'll be forced to download it over a Wi-Fi connection.

The new software update includes all of the usual Marshmallow goodies such as granular (individual) app permissions, the new battery-saving Dose mode, as well as Google Now on Tap. The update will also get rid of Instagram and WhatsApp as preinstalled app, introduces an advanced power saving mode, and adds a "vibration pattern concept".

The Surface 3 is DEAD

Microsoft will stop manufacturing Surface 3 by the end of the year, which raises a big question: Will there be a Surface 4?

The company has declined to say whether a Surface 4 will ever be released. But Microsoft says it saw strong demand for the Surface 3 tablet PC, so releasing a successor seems like a no-brainer.

But the PC market is challenged. Upgrades have slowed down to every five or six years, and tablet shipments—with the exception of 2-in-1s—are declining. PC makers are already releasing innovative products that could be viable options to a Surface 3 successor.

The price of the Surface 3 starts at $499, and the device is targeted at consumers. Microsoft also sells big brother Surface Pro 4, which has flashier features and starts at $849.

Samsung launches new flexible 2-in-1

For a brief time after tablets hit the market, potential buyers were stuck between buying a regular laptop and the versatile compact.

That's why hybrids have since followed, with Samsung the latest tech giant to get in on the act.

The company has launched the Notebook 7 Spin, which, as you might have guessed from the name, owns a screen which is able to rotate the full 360 degrees. This allows users to flip between a regular laptop, a tent-like setup or a full tablet.
The Spin is available in 13.3-inch and 15.6-inch screen models with full HD resolution plus HDR (High Dynamic Range) video support, with the internal specs offering an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, 8GB of RAM (13-inch) or 12GB or 16GB of RAM (15-inch), and 1TB of hard drive storage.

LeEco LeMax 2 Pro rumored to have 8GB of RAM

If you thought the 6GB of RAM that the OnePlus 3 launched with was pushing the limits of what's needed in a smartphone you might be baffled by the LeEco LeMax 2 Pro, which is rumored to be launching with 8GB of RAM. That's twice as much as the Samsung Galaxy S7 has and in line with many laptops.

So what can the LeMax 2 Pro possibly be doing with all that power? Not much in all likelihood, but it's not just the RAM that's beyond what's offered by the competition, as according to PhoneRadar, which spotted a Weibo teaser image pointing to a June 29 announcement for the handset, it's also thought to use a Snapdragon 821 processor.

That's not yet been used by any phone, but it's expected to offer a slight performance boost on the flagship Snapdragon 820, found in the likes of the HTC 10 and LG G5. Supposedly the Snapdragon 821 will be a quad-core chip clocked at up to 2.3GHz, rather than the 2.15GHz that the Snapdragon 820 tops out at.

Will Apple wait until iPhone 8 for big changes?

Apple Inc. plans to break with its recent pattern of overhauling the design of its flagship iPhone every two years, and make only subtle changes in the models it will release this fall, according to people familiar with the matter.

Among other things, those people said, Apple’s newest phones will maintain the current 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays. Those are the sizes of the larger-display models Apple introduced in 2014, and refreshed with newer models last fall.

The biggest planned change in this year’s phones is the removal of the headphone plug, which will make the phone thinner and improve its water resistance

Apple plans bigger design changes for 2017, the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone.

Huawei's MateBook Windows tablet is coming to the US

Huawei's MateBook, a Windows 2-in-1 tablet, will be launching in the United States in the near future for $699. For that price, you get a convertible Windows 10 machine featuring a 12.9-inch display (2160 x 1440 resolution), Intel's Skylake Core M processor, 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.

The MateBook made its debut back at Mobile World Congress in February, and we were impressed during our initial hands-on. Huawei's battery life claims are certainly impressive: nine hours of video playback. And remember that the volume rocker also doubles as a fingerprint reader, which is a neat little trick.

The HP Elite X3 is just around the corner?

The launch of the giant HP Elite X3 seems to be just around the corner, judging by recent Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certifications for the device. The Elite X3 was announced back in February, at MWC 2016, with the ambitious promise to fuse the capabilities of a smartphone, a PC and a laptop in one device (with the help of several accessories). After that, HP went silent for a while, until it showed off the phone at Computex 2016 and teased us with a handful of videos earlier this month.

The Elite X3 is coming soon, and when it lands, it's going to be the most powerful Windows 10 smartphone around. With its 6-inch 2K screen, 4GB of RAM and 4,150 mAh battery, powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 820 CPU with two cores clocked at 2,15GHz and two running at 1,6GHz, the Elite X3 might be able to make a splash in the Windows mobile market before (if) the fabled Surface Phone is released.

Galaxy Note 7 to have Iris Scanner

South Korean smartphone giant is widely expected to pack an iris scanner on the company's next Galaxy Note phablet. There have been reports earlier claiming that Samsung is planning to include the iris scanner on this year's Galaxy Note 7.

Now, a new report from Korea suggests that Patron, a Korea-based camera module maker, will supply the iris camera modules to Samsung. Korea Herald reports that Patron won the tender months ago for supplying the entire volume of biometric modules needed for possibly for the Galaxy Note 7. The report again stresses that the iris scanner is an even better secured biometric technology compared to the fingerprint scanner. The smartphone is expected to sport the iris scanner at the front panel.

Apple watch 2 coming soon??

Today, the Apple Watch is 14 months old and has, very obviously, skipped its chance to get an annual refresh cycle.

So, will there be a second Watch any time soon, and for how long should we expect each generation of this product to be relevant? These are both valid questions, but, unfortunately, we've no way to know what Apple is planning for the wearable, at least not that early in the line's life. But, judging from the massive overhaul of the watchOS software that was presented at WWDC 2016, it's obvious that Apple is not to be discouraged by a slight drop in interest, and will be looking to rekindle interest towards its wearable once again.

Galaxy S7 Review

Samsung needs no introduction, it’s one of the two leading smartphone and mobile brands in the world, sitting at the top alongside Apple, and the most successful company in the Android device space. Likewise the Samsung Galaxy S series, now in its seventh generation, should be very familiar to most as the firm’s flagship - the best of the best that it has to offer; cutting edge design, and all the latest high-grade tech.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 is a bit of a curious iteration, however, in the sense that by many accounts it is proving very popular already, selling like the proverbial hotcakes, you might say. That’s curious because, truth be told, it is not enormously different from 2015’s Galaxy S6 in many ways, and that handset didn’t do so well. So what’s so great about this year’s revamp? That’s something we aim to find out in this serialised review, so join us on a multi-stage journey as we live with and explore the features of the latest Samsung Galaxy S over the coming days.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Review: Design
Dimensions: 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm
Weight: 152g
IP68 Certified Waterproof
Corning Gorilla Glass 4

It’s fair to say that design wise the Galaxy S7 is near identical to 2015’s Galaxy S6, so anyone expecting some major visual overhaul may be in for a disappointment. But, with that said, I don’t think a repeat of the design is a bad thing - for whatever reason the Galaxy S6 didn’t sell so well, but I find it pretty hard to believe the design was in any way a factor in this large-scale shunning. Last year’s Galaxy S6 design was the first time Samsung had implemented a metal and glass premium build on a flagship model, and, just so that there’s no confusion here I won’t mince words - it made every Galaxy handset that came before it look like crap. So I for one am very glad to see it make a return for the Galaxy S7.

Meet the luxury phone for the super paranoid

If you want to keep spies out of your business and you've got money to burn, then the Solarin phone from new startup Sirin Labs is the smartphone for you.

It's built from luxury materials, but its main aim is to encrypt all your calls and messages, making sure that all those shady deals you're doing stay firmly between you and your dodgy contacts.

Privacy comes at a price, though, and that price according to Sirin Labs £9,500 ($16,000). That's the starting price for the Solarin, but you can add even more money onto that if you want fancy metals like real gold. Which you do, of course.

The phone is available to buy online, or you can go down to Sirin Labs' retail store in no other than London's fanciest area, Mayfair.

iPad Pro's Latest Rival is the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S 2-in-1 Slate

The ultra-thin Galaxy TabPro S tablet is the result of a close collaboration between Samsung, Intel, and Microsoft. With full Windows 10 on board, the newcomer is part of a new generation of 2-in-1 tablets that can do a whole lot more than their looks suggest, thanks to their capability to run full desktop apps.

Being a Samsung mobile device, the TabPro S can also integrate closely with the tech giant's latest Android smartphones. Dubbed Samsung Flow, one hot new feature in the device allows users to view notifications from their Galaxy smartphone on the TabPro S, use their smartphone as a mobile hotspot, as well as unlock the tablet using the phone's fingerprint sensor.

iPhone 7 to have Dual Curve Display

Given the iPhone 7 is shaping up to be a (controversial) disappointment, many are questioning how Apple will respond? Now the answer is becoming increasingly clear: in great style…

Following on from leaks that Apple will pull out all the stops for its 2017 iPhone with an ‘all glass’ design (since confirmed by a major Apple supplier), the Wow Factor has now been increased further by news it will also contain a ‘dual curve display’.

This would look akin to Samsung’s stunning Galaxy Edge smartphone range and tie into earlier reports about how the new iPhone will have an ‘Edgeless display’
Interestingly the source for this announcement is a good one: IHS Technology’s director of market research Kevin Wang who only last week revealed Apple will double iPhone 7 storage capacities. Something since corroborated by multiple reports.

Throw in the fact supply chains have shown for months that Apple is stockpiling OLED panels and it looks like the company will produce a ground-up redesign of the iPhone unlike anything users have seen before.

Microsoft Surface Phone set for 2017?

Microsoft has long been rumored to be working on a flagship Surface Phone. It seems those rumors have finally come to reality

The Redmond technology firm had planned to release a version of the Surface Phone back in 2012, sources told BGR and The Wall Street Journal.
Those plans were scrapped as Microsoft acquired Nokia’s smartphone business.

The smartphone is rumored to be set for a 2017 launch. Speculation is because the Surface Phone is believed to be closely tied to the next blockbuster Windows 10 update, codenamed RedStone 2, which scheduled for April next year. Surface fans thought they might have to wait until Build 2017 to get a glimpse of the new gadget.

A photo posted in the user forum of Baidu appears to offer the first glimpse at the revived Surface Phone project.
The photograph is believed to be authentic and comes from a source who has leaked accurate information in the past.

Google plans to bring a modular phone to market

Initially there was a concept called Phonebloks created by the designer Dave Hakkens that was a fully modular smartphone where all components could be repaired, replaced or upgraded separately, and fit together like LEGO pieces -- basically an eternally improvable phone that would cut down on the e-waste generated by the current market of yearly or bi-yearly phone upgrades.

After that, Google announced plans to bring such a phone to the market and called it Project Ara and years later, Google has announced that the modular smartphone will finally be released next year. It will be Google's first phone, designed and manufactured by the tech giant.

The Android-powered phone will have a skeleton that houses all of the basic phone functions, including CPU, GPU, antennas, sensors, battery and display and then users can get creative with the modules they snap on and off. There is space on the phone for six regular size modules or 2 double-sized modules and 2 regular ones. The modules will include things like cameras, speakers, sensors and more.
