Samsung is recalling millions of new Galaxy Note 7 smartphones worldwide after reports of the devices catching fire while charging.

The massive recall of one of Samsung's flagship devices is an embarrassing setback for the world's biggest selling smartphone maker. The Note 7 was unveiled just a month ago.
Samsung said Friday it had found a problem with the battery in some of the phones and was halting sales. In the coming weeks it will offer customers a new product for free to replace all 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7s that have been sold.

It's unclear what owners of the phones should do now. The company said it will take about two weeks to prepare the recall, and the date new products will be available will vary by country. People worried about their batteries should contact their nearest Samsung service center, it added.

South Korean news agency Yonhap had previously reported that there have been five claims around the world of Note 7s catching fire while charging. Unverified photos posted on social media showed charred devices.
Samsung said it had been alerted to 35 claims of faulty phones worldwide. It said it had so far found 24 devices with problems for every million sold.

At a news conference, company executives declined to comment on exactly how much replacing all the devices would cost.
Samsung shares fell Thursday on reports of problems with the Galaxy Note 7 battery but closed 0.6% higher Friday before the recall was confirmed.

Samsung Notes app will be available for download on older devices

Today, Samsung announced that the powerful Samsung Notes app found on the new Galaxy Note 7 will be available for download on other Note devices in the future. The app is a consolidation of Samsung's previously available, S-Pen powered note-taking apps – Action Memo, S-Note, Scrapbook, and Memo. It lets users conveniently create, edit, and manage their S-Pen notes and drawings from one central location.

Samsung Notes supports handwriting recognition and lets users create memos both by keyboard input and by hand. The search feature in it is able to scan handwritten notes, so users can search inside their scribbles at will. The app also comes with pre-made check boxes, numbering, and font colors, which makes organizing chores and shopping lists faster and easier.

Samsung Gear S3 and Tab S3 To Launch Together

The Gear S3 is expected to come in the same circular shape as the Gear S2, with an AMOLED display. It will also sport the same rotary bezel on its side. The wearable from Samsung is also speculated to contain an altimeter, a barometer and a GPS-based speedometer.
All in all, these features will improve the tracking features of the Gear S2. Theoretically, these will help provide wearers with more reliable information.
The Samsung Gear S3 will also run on the Tizen operating system. There will be two variants of the upcoming device, one coming in a more classic design.

As International Business Times adds, however, Samsung is likely to take the opportunity to also launch the Galaxy Tab S3b at IFA 2016.

Samsung iris scanner and security options on the Note 7

The iris scanning technology used by Samsung in the new Galaxy Note 7 is of the more sophisticated and much faster type that uses a combo of near-IR LED emitter and an iris camera, as opposed to only using the selfie cam and some software to get a lock on your eyes. Samsung says that this is a technology it has had for years in the making, and it might indeed be so, given that we first heard about the possible introduction of an iris recognition tech way back when the S5 was still on the drawing board.

The most important part of the memo, however, is that your iris scans are coded in a digital format and scrambled, so nobody can get a hold on anything that will be of any use to them by hacking or stealing your phone, just the way it is with the finger scans. Thus, feel free to use it with Samsung's new Secret folder that can store all the media, docs, mails, apps and contacts you wan't to keep from prying eyes.

Samsung upgraded Gear VR headset

Samsung launched the brand new Galaxy Note 7 at a trio of events in New York, London and Rio – but it wasn't just the phablet taking center stage. It was joined by an upgraded Gear VR headset too.
The big difference is the larger lenses, giving you a wider field of view for a more immersive VR experience. The controls on the right of the headset have also been given a tweak, and a home button has been added for easier navigation.

Finally, instead of a microUSB connection the new Gear VR has a USB-C pin, allowing it to plug in nicely to the Galaxy Note 7. An adapter is included in the box so you can use your older Samsung flagships though.

Samsung No 1 Mobile Phone Maker

Samsung maintained its lead as the dominant mobile-phone handset maker, helped by the release of new units, while Apple lost ground as consumers halted on purchases of iPhones.

Samsung’s market share climbed to 22.4% in the second quarter from 21.3% in the same period in 2015, according to data released by tech research group IDC. Apple’s share slipped to 11.8% from 13.9%.

At the same time, other phone makers such as Huawei, OPPO and vivo also gained market share, helped by sales in emerging markets such as in Indonesia and the Middle East.

Mystery Samsung tablet

A new Samsung tablet, carrying a model number SM-P585, has been spotted on the website of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC). A quick look at the included render suggests the device comes with a stylus as well as a rear camera with a flash.
The design also indicates a display size of not more than 8-inches.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 release date

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 release date is Tuesday, August 2, according to every rumor out there and, as of this month, a Samsung Unpacked invite.
The August 2 launch event is a little under two weeks earlier in the year than the Galaxy Note 5 announcement. But it's what we've suspected for several months now. A Korean news source believes production to be starting in July - so an August announcement made sense.

Samsung typically launches its Galaxy Note flagships during IFA, which is happening in early September this year, so that's the only other possible launch date, but It may have its hands (or wrists) full with other announcements, like the Samsung Gear S3.

Samsung has got some big foldable ideas

Samsung has filed more patents which could see slates that fold and fit in your pocket.

It would allow for a large screen tablet to fold over in half, much like a book. The patent features a side-screen similar to that from a Samsung Galaxy Edge phone.

That may mean you'd be able to customise the shortcuts included on the side of the phone.

The new patent describes how the technology would allow the user to enter different modes when unfolding the tablet. For example, if you wanted to boot the camera app you'd be able to press on a certain part of a side screen to unlock it.

It also shows a way to unlock the tablet with a passcode down the side screen of the tablet.

Note 7 leak reveals new features

There is a new leak circulating on the interwebs that reveals what some of the new S Pen features of the Note 7 might be. According to iGyaan.in, which has reportedly obtained an internal memo, Samsung has thrown in improved Bluetooth LE connectivity that will enhance the proximity accuracy and allow users to use the stylus longer.

The Air Command is also reportedly getting a functionality update. iGyaa claims the Galaxy Note 7 will score Dictionary and Speaking features — the first one will probably allow users to quickly translate words from one language to another, whereas the other could be a text-to-speech functionality. That's a bit speculative, yet logical.

It also seems that Samsung has redesigned the appearance S Pen stylus. While there might not be much leeway here, we suppose that the clickable button that was introduced alongside Note 5's stylus might be getting revised.

Additionally, iGyaan's secretive source claims the iris scanner will be able to lock apps, files, folders, and documents. The rumors about the Snapdragon 823 chipset making the rounds are also getting confirmed.

Smart Glow smarter for Galaxy S8?

A couple of weeks ago a new Samsung feature dubbed Smart Glow was unearthed. It took the form of a ring of LEDs around the rear camera lens and promised to smarten up your notification lights and your selfies on future Samsung phones, but it seems there could be a lot more to it than was initially revealed.

According to SamMobile, Smart Glow will get smarter over time. The feature will apparently first launch on the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2016) with three functions, namely 'Priority alerts', 'Selfie assist' and 'Usage alerts'.

Priority alerts would allow users to assign colors to specific contacts, so you can see who's calling or messaging you without looking at the screen. Selfie assist would cause the LEDs to light up when a face is detected, and then automatically take a picture a couple of seconds later, making it easier to use the rear camera for selfies.

Finally, Usage alerts would light up in specific colors to show the battery or charging status of the phone.
