Microsoft's canceled 3D Touch Windows phone

Microsoft was planning to introduce its own unique 3D Touch feature for Windows Phones back in 2014.
Microsoft decided to cancel the flagship and focus on the emergence of Windows 10 for mobiles. Windows Central has managed to get access to a McLaren prototype, and it looks like a mix of Nokia's Lumia 1020 and Lumia 925. Previous leaks have shown off the camera bump, and compared the device to an iPhone.
Windows Central has even reviewed the entire device, detailing its 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 5.5-inch full HD display, and the 20-megapixel camera.The most interesting aspect of the McLaren was, without a doubt, the 3D Touch features. Microsoft had been experimenting with a variety of Kinect-like features that would allow users to hover over the display with a finger and interact with apps. Some of those features also included the ability to answer calls by holding the phone to your ear, along with options to set the phone down on a table to enable speakerphone, or to hang up a call by placing it in your pocket.

The Surface 3 is DEAD

Microsoft will stop manufacturing Surface 3 by the end of the year, which raises a big question: Will there be a Surface 4?

The company has declined to say whether a Surface 4 will ever be released. But Microsoft says it saw strong demand for the Surface 3 tablet PC, so releasing a successor seems like a no-brainer.

But the PC market is challenged. Upgrades have slowed down to every five or six years, and tablet shipments—with the exception of 2-in-1s—are declining. PC makers are already releasing innovative products that could be viable options to a Surface 3 successor.

The price of the Surface 3 starts at $499, and the device is targeted at consumers. Microsoft also sells big brother Surface Pro 4, which has flashier features and starts at $849.

Microsoft Surface Phone set for 2017?

Microsoft has long been rumored to be working on a flagship Surface Phone. It seems those rumors have finally come to reality

The Redmond technology firm had planned to release a version of the Surface Phone back in 2012, sources told BGR and The Wall Street Journal.
Those plans were scrapped as Microsoft acquired Nokia’s smartphone business.

 The smartphone is rumored to be set for a 2017 launch. Speculation is because the Surface Phone is believed to be closely tied to the next blockbuster Windows 10 update, codenamed RedStone 2, which scheduled for April next year. Surface fans thought they might have to wait until Build 2017 to get a glimpse of the new gadget.

A photo posted in the user forum of Baidu appears to offer the first glimpse at the revived Surface Phone project.

Nokia to make a comeback?

The Finnish company Nokia never really went away, we just stopped caring about the colorful Windows Phones being turned out under Microsoft's ownership, especially when they repeatedly proved less capable and exciting than similar Android and iOS offerings.

The Nokia name is coming back thanks to a new license agreement that allows Finnish company HMD to sell phones using the name over the next ten years. The product will be manufactured by FIH, a subsidiary of FoxConn.

The deal doesn't involve Nokia Technologies (the current form of the phone brand) buying any equity in HMD, instead it will receive royalty payments in exchange for its name and and cellular standard patent licenses. HMD's Nokia-labeled products will, however, be scrutinized to make sure they're up to scratch with what's expected of the brand.

According to HMD's CEO in-waiting, Arto Nummela, the venture is built around Nokia's instantly recognizable name.

Rather than running with Windows Phone like recent offerings, the new devices will be built around the Android platform.
