The BlackBerry DTEK50 Is Just The Beginning

BlackBerry will apparently be launching three Android phones this year. And the DTEK50 is one of the lower-end models, judging by its $299 price tag. This is likely a good thing, though, because BlackBerry — once again — hasn’t scrimped on anything: the DTEK50 looks great and packs in plenty of useful specs and hardware, so you’re getting quite a bit for your buck.
BlackBerry's newest offering comes with a 5.2-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 13MP rear camera with phase detection autofocus and LED flash, an 8 MP selfie shooter, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 617 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, and a 2,610 mAh battery. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

BlackBerry says the DTEK50 is the world’s most secure phone. It also confirmed that it will be issuing monthly security updates to the phone in order to keep it this way.

Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Plus 10 Leaks

The device was spotted in a handful of press renders passed along by German tech blog WinFuture, and judging by these images alone the slate will flaunt the same design language as the previous models, featuring a wall mount as well as a cylindrical base that should double as housing for the battery. The tablet’s back panel appears to be covered in leather – not unlike the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro –  and reportedly the slate will measure only 4.7 millimeters at its thinnest point. As far as hardware specifications are concerned, the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Plus 10 sports a 10-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a pixel density of around 299 pixels per inch, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 system-on-chip featuring a 6-core processor clocked at frequencies of up to 1.8 GHz per core, and an Adreno 510 graphics chip. Otherwise, the slate is reportedly equipped with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory expandable via microSD, a 13-megapixel main camera complemented by a 5-megapixel front-facing sensor, and a JBL audio setup with Dolby Atmos support.

Nougat is finally here for your Nexus

Google's newest version of Android OS 7.0, also known as Nougat, arrives in its first official form today.

Nougat, which many people have been playing with in a public beta since May, adds a number of new features to Android. Multi-window multitasking, extra battery-saving modes, baked-in support for Google's upcoming VR platform called Daydream and a bunch of new emoji are part of the changes. There is, as always, a catch: The vast majority of Android users won't get Nougat on their device for weeks, if not months.
It's being pushed to Nexus devices first. The Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C and General Mobile 4G (Android One) will get pushed over-the-air updates in "the coming weeks." Any device enrolled in Google's Android Beta program will be automatically upgraded to the final version as well.

LG's new V20 with quad DAC

The Korean electronics giant on Wednesday said the V20 -- its next-generation flagship phone -- will feature a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC (digital to analog converter) in what LG called an industry first. LG said the DAC produces a crisp and clear sound reproduction that reduces ambient noise by up to 50 percent.

In addition to its DAC, the device is also expected to be the first phone to sport the new Android 7.0 operating system, known as Nougat.

90% of Android devices are safe from QuadRooter

Recently, it's been discovered that nearly 1 billion Android devices could be affected by a new set of security vulnerabilities gathered under the name QuadRooter. The vulnerabilities can potentially put at risk pretty much any Qualcomm Snapdragon-based Android device, but only if a user installs certain malicious apps.

A security patch to fully address this won't be out before September, but, fortunately, folks installing only apps from Google Play can not be affected by QuadRooter vulnerabilities anyway.

Since Verify Apps is enabled by default on devices running Android 4.2 or later and featuring Google Play services, it safeguards about 90% of all Android devices currently in use. If you do try to install content from unknown sources, Verify Apps will block the installation if it detects something suspicious.

HTC Desire 530 now available in US

Last month the HTC Desire 530 became available in the US for the first time, both in unlocked form as well as through T-Mobile. And starting today Verizon is offering the handset too, even undercutting the magenta carrier on price.

You can purchase the Desire 530 online from Big Red right now, or if you want to buy it from a store you need to wait until August 11. It's priced at $6 per month with a 24-month installment plan, adding up to a full retail price of $144 ($16 less than at T-Mobile).

LG V20 to run Nougat Software

Last year's LG V10 was arguably a more interesting phone than the South Korean company's G4 flagship, offering two screens, two selfie cameras and a phablet-sized main display – and now LG is updating the handset for 2016.

LG has confirmed in a blog post that it will launch the V20 in September. The phone will run Android 7 Nougat software, and will likely be one of the very first handsets to do so.

We were big fans of the LG V10,  praising it for its strong dual-lens selfie camera, durable design and interesting second screen concept.

NVIDIA SHIELD now meets Android 6.0 requirements

The NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet provides one of the best Android gaming experiences you can currently have, and right now an update is rolling out to the device. Following this latest release, the slate now meets Android 6.0 Professional Audio requirements. This means low latency audio, MIDI support over USB and Bluetooth, 24-bit@192kHz Stereo and 7.1 HDMI output, and other audio improvements. In-game audio should sound more responsive, and the same is true when listening to music or watching video.

Other improvements concern touch responsiveness, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, security patches, and the Vulkan API. You can also toggle nav button position. This is the same update that went out to the newer SHIELD Tablet K1 last month, and it comes two months after getting a bump up to Android 6.0.1.

Google Nexus not made by HTC?

Rumors indicate that Chinese device maker Huawei could end up assembling the Google Nexus 2016 flagship phone and the chief reason is, Taiwan's HTC has decided to back out of the coveted project. A new report claims that in skipping the next Nexus, HTC is actually protecting its flagship HTC 10.
A news article published by the Daily Sun claimed that sales trajectory of the HTC 10 is heading north and to keep that trend, the struggling device maker is likely to pass up on the Nexus 2016 project. Recent reports said that Google has inked a deal with HTC for the latter to produce two Pure Android handsets this year - a mid-range variant and a premium edition that will largely replicate the Nexus 2015 release last year.
However, the project would not push through after all with HTC belatedly realizing that a Nexus smartphone that mirror the design, build, specs and features of its current flagship "would cannibalize the sales of the HTC 10." The report added that given a choice between the HTC 10 and a Nexus counterpart that runs on stock Android, buyers might skip the original in favor of the Google-sanctioned device.
Naturally, HTC dreads such a scenario and would want to prevent it from happening so the best decision is to allow others to pick up on the Nexus project from Google.
Google and Huawei, HTC including, have yet to comment on the matter but speculations are rife that the sequel to last year's Pure Android device will touchdown at around the same time that Android N is ready to rock and roll with uncompressed Google Photo storage as among the exclusive features for Nexus device.

Motorola unveiled three new smartphones

Motorola unveiled three new smartphones: the fourth-generation Moto G, the Moto G Plus and the Moto G Play.

The Moto G and Moto G Plus can be customized using Moto Maker, while the Moto G Play can not. All three run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
The Moto G and Moto G Plus became available Tuesday in Brazil and India. They will be rolled out across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia over time. The lower-end Moto G Play will be available globally this summer, Motorola said.
Both the Moto G and Moto G Plus models have a 5.5-inch 1080p full HD display. They have a 16-MP rear camera and a 5-MP front camera. They run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 octacore processor that goes up to 1.5 GHz, and have a 550-MHz Adreno 405 GPU.

The Moto G and Moto G Plus are available in dual-SIM versions in select regions and offer 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage. They both take 15 minutes to charge the battery for six hours of use.

The Moto G Plus is available with 2 GB or 4 GB of ROM storage. The Moto G comes with only 2 GB of ROM storage.

The Moto G Plus has a fingerprint reader.

The Moto G, Moto G Plus and Moto G Play all have water-repellent coatings and all-day batteries, and they support a microSD card of up to 128-GB capacity.

The Moto G Play has a 5-inch 720p HD screen; an 8-MP rear camera and a 5-MP front camera. It runs on a quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor.

Nokia to make a comeback?

The Finnish company Nokia never really went away, we just stopped caring about the colorful Windows Phones being turned out under Microsoft's ownership, especially when they repeatedly proved less capable and exciting than similar Android and iOS offerings.

The Nokia name is coming back thanks to a new license agreement that allows Finnish company HMD to sell phones using the name over the next ten years. The product will be manufactured by FIH, a subsidiary of FoxConn.

The deal doesn't involve Nokia Technologies (the current form of the phone brand) buying any equity in HMD, instead it will receive royalty payments in exchange for its name and and cellular standard patent licenses. HMD's Nokia-labeled products will, however, be scrutinized to make sure they're up to scratch with what's expected of the brand.

According to HMD's CEO in-waiting, Arto Nummela, the venture is built around Nokia's instantly recognizable name.

Rather than running with Windows Phone like recent offerings, the new devices will be built around the Android platform.

OnePlus is one of the most exciting smartphone manufacturers right now. Two years in a row it has produced reasonably priced flagship phones that have been (almost) capable of going toe-to-toe with the major manufacturers. While OnePlus' "flagship killer" slogan may be a little hyperbolic, there's no doubt that its phones are of a high standard.
Xiaomi Mi5
Xiaomi is the incredibly popular Chinese manufacturer edging its way towards the West. It's yet to release one of its flagships in the US, but that hasn't stopped Xiaomi becoming the fourth largest smartphone manufacturer (based on market share) in the world during 2015.
Project Tango
Project Ara isn't the only new Google phone/prototype/thing that's set to arrive in 2016. There's also Project Tango, for which Google has teamed up with Lenovo to transform "your smartphone into a magic lens that lets you place digital information on your physical world". OK...
Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, and Galaxy S7 Edge+
Samsung's Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge changed a number of important aspects of the Galaxy S series design. They lost the removable battery and expandable storage, and a lot of people fell out of love with the Korean manufacturer as a result. However, Samsung still produced two fantastically fast handsets, with delicious displays and compelling cameras, things that Samsung rarely gets wrong.
